QHATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI – From the Buffalo Soldiers of the post–Civil War era through the modern-day conflicts in the Middle East, the African American Military History Museum in downtown Hattiesburg bears wit- ness to the service and sacrifice of the African American soldier. Opened in 2009, the museum was severely damaged just four years later by a tornado that ripped through Hattiesburg in early 2013. In all, there was about $450,000 damage to the building and $600,000 to the museum contents. Reconstruction began with the help of many local residents, including employ- ees from the Sherwin-Williams Jackson District who volunteered to repaint the mu- seum exterior. Duration Exterior Acrylic Coating was used for a long-lasting finish. Built in 1942, the museum building originally served as the East Sixth Street USO Club, a home away from home for African American soldiers who were stationed at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. Segregation was still in effect in the armed forces during World War II, and the Hattiesburg building is the only remaining USO constructed especially for African American soldiers in public use in the United States. It is now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places… and back in business following a devastating tornado. WORK- PLACE WISDOM: BAN BURNOUT! Sixteen-hour days get entrepreneurs lost in the minutiae. They lose perspective and burn out. Focus on your own strengths, then plug the holes. Few of us are great at everything! If bookkeeping's not your thing, hire an accountant. If you don't have marketing experi- ence, find someone with proven skills. Trying to perform jobs that you don't do well will require twice as much effort with less-than-satisfactory results. – Zenovia Andrews, a business develop- ment strategist and author of the book All Systems Go, blogs at zenoviaandrews.com.
